<title>Background</title>
<p><italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> is a hydrophyte with a nymphaeid growth form and is known to be an invader of aquatic ecosystems.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st2">
<title>Objectives</title>
<p>To document the presence of <italic>N. peltata</italic> outside of cultivation in southern Africa.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st3">
<title>Method</title>
<p>Herbarium vouchers of newly collected material were compared against the vouchers of indigenous members of the genus and with the relevant botanical literature to confirm the identity of the species.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st4">
<title>Results</title>
<p><italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> is confirmed as occurring outside of cultivation for the first time in South Africa. The species was recorded from two dams adjacent to the Umgeni River in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st5">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>This is the first record of a non-indigenous species of the <italic>Menyanthaceae</italic> family for South Africa outside of cultivation and adds to our knowledge of the alien aquatic flora of the region. <italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> is listed as a Category 1a species, which means that it should be eradicated.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p><italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> (S.G.Gmel.) Kuntze, commonly known as yellow floating heart, is a perennial hydrophyte of the <italic>Menyanthaceae</italic> family. It grows in still or slow-flowing rivers and its indigenous range is extensive, including most of Europe, Asia Minor, north-central Russia (Tutin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">1972</xref>) and Japan (Zoku <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">1965</xref>). The <italic>Nymphoides</italic> genus has approximately 50 species (Tippery &#x0026; Les <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">2011</xref>), 13 of which are considered indigenous to Africa and Madagascar (Raynal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">1974</xref>).</p>
<p>Within Africa, <italic>N. peltata</italic> has been recorded outside of cultivation in Ghana (JIRCAS <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2010</xref>) and Algeria (De B&#x00E9;lair <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2010</xref>). De B&#x00E9;lair (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2010</xref>) listed <italic>N. peltata</italic> as indigenous to Algeria based on a record of one population near the town of Ben Azzouz. The absence of any record of this species in earlier botanical literature covering this region (Gubb <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">1909</xref>; Quezel &#x0026; Santa <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1962</xref>; Raynal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">1974</xref>; Wild <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">1961</xref>) suggests that it may be an introduced species that has escaped from cultivation.</p>
<p>Five <italic>Nymphoides</italic> species are indigenous to southern Africa and to date no naturalised non-indigenous species have been recorded (Bredenkamp <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2006</xref>; Cook <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2004</xref>; GBIF <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2017</xref>; SAPIA <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2016</xref>; Whitehouse <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">1996</xref>). Despite this, <italic>N. peltata</italic> is listed on the <italic>South African National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act</italic> (NEMBA) regulations (NEMBA <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2014</xref>) as a Category 1a species, making it a species requiring compulsory control and eradication. This pre-emptive measure was based on <italic>N. peltata</italic> being invasive in Canada (Darbyshire &#x0026; Francis <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2008</xref>) and Sweden (Larson &#x0026; Will&#x00E9;n <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2006</xref>), as well as naturalised in the American states of Tennessee (Chester <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">1996</xref>), Oklahoma, New York and Arizona (Clarke <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">1937</xref>; Correll &#x0026; Correll <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">1972</xref>; Crow &#x0026; Hellquist <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">2000</xref>).</p>
<p><italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> is cultivated as an ornamental plant in garden pools (Chester <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">1996</xref>) and aquaria (Allgayer &#x0026; Teton <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1987</xref>). In 2007, a landowner from Gauteng, South Africa, reported a cultivated population growing so prolifically that he needed assistance in its control (Henderson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2017</xref>). It was growing in an artificial, contained pond and was probably destroyed, as recent attempts to find this population have been unsuccessful (D. Cindi [South African National Biodiversity Institute], pers. comm., 01 November 2016).</p>
<p>This article reports the first record of <italic>N. peltata</italic> outside of cultivation in South Africa.</p>

<sec id="s0002">
<title>Research methods</title>
<p>An unknown <italic>Nymphoides</italic> species was reported in two dams adjacent to the Mgeni River in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands (S29.44952&#x00B0; E30.31430&#x00B0;; <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Figure 1</xref>) in January 2016 (H. Grobler [Karkloof Safari Spa], pers. comm., 28 January 2016). Herbarium voucher specimens were collected and submitted to the KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium and were identified as <italic>N. peltata</italic> by the author. This was done through comparing the voucher specimens to the existing collections of this genus and to descriptions in the relevant literature (Darbyshire &#x0026; Francis <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2008</xref>; Mackinder <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">1990</xref>; Tippery, Les &#x0026; Jones <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2012</xref>; Whitehouse <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">1996</xref>). The Compton (NBG), KwaZulu-Natal (NH), Bews (NU) and the National Herbarium (PRE) did not have any specimens of <italic>N. peltata</italic>.</p>

<title>Ethical considerations</title>
<p>Material was gathered under permit OP 3929/2015 issued by Ezemvelo-KZN Wildlife.</p>

<title>Results</title>
<p><italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> was discovered in two dams that are part of a series of interconnected dams that are also connected to the Mgeni River, upstream of where the Mgeni joins the Karkloof River. The two dams have areas of 3.2 and 0.2 ha, and have <italic>N. peltata</italic> concentrated along the dam edges amongst indigenous sedges (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0002">Figure 2</xref>). In 2016, the <italic>N. peltata</italic> flowered from January to April, dying back in the winter months, and in 2017, it flowered again in January. Hippos (<italic>Hippopotamus amphibius</italic> L.) on a game farm on which the dams are located were seen eating <italic>N. peltata</italic> (P. le Roux [Karkloof Safari Spa], pers. comm., 09 February 2017).</p>

<title>Discussion</title>
<p>The origin of this <italic>N. peltata</italic> population is currently unknown. The seeds are dispersed through water and by birds, being disc shaped with marginal trichomes that can stick to waterfowl (Cook <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">1990</xref>). This is a possible pathway through which the plant could have arrived at these dams.</p>
<p>In its native range, <italic>N. peltata</italic> shows pioneer plant characteristics and can colonise large areas through vegetative growth in a season (Brock et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">1983</xref>). <italic>Nymphoides peltata</italic> has had a significant impact on habitat structure and competitive interactions in the Swedish lakes where it has become established (Josefsson &#x0026; Andersson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2001</xref>) and a weed risk assessment by the United States Department of Agriculture ranked the species high for impact and spread potential in the United States (USDA <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2012</xref>).</p>
<p>Considering its impact elsewhere, this species warrants further research and a detailed weed risk assessment as laid out by Kumschick et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2015</xref>). A management plan has already been submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs (Cindi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2016</xref>). However, surveys of nurseries and water bodies would help to get a more accurate delineation of <italic>N. peltata</italic>&#x2019;s distribution and possible origin.</p>
